Linda D. Gilkerson has either owned businesses or worked with dreamers who want to own their own businesses for the past 20 years. She opened and ran two successful retail businesses—a balloon business and a hat store. She met Theresia Paauwe while working for a microenterprise program that was part of a community development corporation. They created Business Matters, a consulting firm to provide training and curriculum to microenterprise programs. They also formed a not-for-profit organization, Neighborhood Self-Employment Initiative, of which Gilkerson was the director for three years. She continues to work with dreamers who want to own businesses in the capacity of manager of franchise development at Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc.
Theresia M. Paauwe is the founder and president of Business Matters Training Resources, Inc. While working in corporate management and managing a number of successful corporate turnarounds, Paauwe owned and operated two home-based microbusinesses. She then entered the field of community economic development, working for an Indianapolis microenterprise program. She worked with struggling entrepreneurs as a business development trainer, technical assistance provider, and loan fund manager. In 1994, she founded Business Matters to provide training materials, training, and consulting services to not-for-profit organizations, state associations, government agencies, educational organizations, and individuals. Paauwe is a published author, curriculum developer, small business columnist for BKMagazine, and public speaker.
