S.K.I.T. is a versatile program to use with children who are displaced and may be going through tough times. Child care staff and volunteers who work with kids in domestic abuse shelters, runaway and homeless youth facilities, programs for low-income families, and support groups for children of incarcerated parents will find the curriculum useful in helping kids build self-esteem and learn social skills.

The program is divided into three different age levels—3 to 6, 6 to 9, and 9 to 12—and includes eight sessions for each group. Each session is in an easy-to-use and clear format that can be used with minimal preparation and last from one to two hours. Each lesson plan is independent of the others and does not need to be taught in sequence.

Four major themes are covered for each age group:

  • Self-esteem
  • Decision-making skills
  • Family and friends
  • Substance abuse (an optional topic)

S.K.I.T. also contains intake information forms, session evaluations, and program evaluation forms.

“The S.K.I.T. program uses valuable tools for helping children in transition learn skills to help them through the 'tough times' such as divorce, homelessness, loss of a parent, etc....This program has been used effectively throughout our state.”
